Description for your Owl Books website

A wonderfully unusual literary collection inspired by William Shakespeare.

First published by Hamish Hamilton in 1982, Shakespeare Stories brings together original short stories by an exceptional group of contemporary writers, each responding in their own way to Shakespeare, his characters and his world.

Edited and introduced by Giles Gordon and illustrated by celebrated artist Robin Jacques, the collection includes contributions from Salman Rushdie, Angela Carter, Kingsley Amis, William Boyd, J. L. Carr, Brigid Brophy, Emma Tennant, Robert Nye, Paul Bailey, Allan Massie, Elspeth Davie and others.

Among its twenty stories are Salman Rushdie’s “Yorick,” Angela Carter’s “Overture and Incidental Music for A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” Kingsley Amis’s “Affairs of Death,” and William Boyd’s “Extracts from the Journal of Flying Officer J.”

This is the 1982 first edition, published in London by Hamish Hamilton. Its distinctive Robin Jacques dust-jacket artwork—with Shakespeare rather memorably holding his own severed head—is especially striking. The Morgan Library records the original edition as bound in brown cloth with a pictorial dust jacket designed by Jacques.

Condition: Very Good vintage condition. Original illustrated dust jacket present, with light age and shelf wear. Please refer to photographs for condition.

An appealing collectible for lovers of Shakespeare, modern British literature and unusual literary anthologies.
