This is an interesting antiquarian children’s school reader, and the title itself is over 125 years old.

Fifty Famous Stories Retold was written by James Baldwin (1841–1925), an American educator and prolific writer of schoolbooks. It was originally published by the American Book Company in 1896, as part of its Eclectic School Readings series. The original edition has 172 pages.

The book contains 50 short retellings of famous historical, legendary and folkloric stories intended for young readers. They include King Alfred and the Cakes, Robin Hood, William Tell, Robert the Bruce, Sir Walter Raleigh, Pocahontas, George Washington, Julius Caesar, Damon and Pythias, Androclus and the Lion, Napoleon, and others. The purpose wasn’t simply entertainment—it was designed to introduce children to history, folklore and stories that they would encounter later in literature.

The book shows an attractive decorated cloth binding, with black/grey printing and orange highlights. It has considerable wear at the spine ends and corners, but the pictorial cover remains quite appealing.
